We were about a mile from the end of our walk, going slowly up a steep hill on a narrow road, and came across this lovely village cemetery. There was one ogham stone in it, and the oldest date I saw was 1880.

A lovely little well, with ribbons and tags hanging in the tree branches above it. Margaret added the cloth flower from her hat.

Built in the 1500s, mostly destroyed by Cromwell’s guys in 1650. You can’t actually get to it, but you can get pretty close. It’s much bigger than it looks.

We passed this tree on the way out of Anascaul on our last day of hiking…those lumpy things are rook nests, and they were all flying around yelling at each other.

There was something like this in Cork; the name Tom Crean sounded familiar to me but I couldn’t place it. Then we hiked to Anascaul and found a plaque outside of town- he was part of Shackleton’s Endurance party (and that was his third Antarctic expedition).
